New Creighton President Visits With Latino Community

On Thursday, January 5, Creighton’s new President, Fr. Timothy Lannon, S.J., arrived at the HWC office to meet with the Latino Community.  Approximately 30 directors and leaders from organizations working with and serving the Latino/a community were present, including Midlands Latino Community Development Coorporation (MLCDC), Latino Center of the Midlands, OLLAS, Nebraska Appleseed, College of St. Mary, Juan Diego Center, and One World Community Health Center. The purpose of the meeting, organized by the Creighton Center for Service and Justice (CCSJ), was to begin to form a relationship with this new leader within the Creighton community and ours.  Therefore, during the meeting, the various leaders discussed what each organization has done.  In listening to the description of each organization, it was realized that, in some way, the majority of those present focus on education.  Whether it be it formal education (K-12, higher education or adult education), the arts, health, or labor rights, our goal is to create a better community through increased awareness and knowledge.

Representatives also shared how they have collaborated with Creighton University prior to Fr. Lannon’s arrival, as well as hopes or ideas for future collaboration.  One hope the HWC has for Creighton University is to begin to put effort towards and educate future attorneys on labor law, especially for the benefit of low-wage and entry-level workers within our community.  At this time, the law school does not have a faculty member who specializes in labor law.  To have a local attorney knowledgeable on labor law and on the side of the workers, rather than only on the side of the company, would be a great benefit for the community.  It would provide workers with the ability to pursue cases against unscrupulous employers more easily because there would be an attorney locally, rather than have to look for one from another state, as was such the case against Nebraska Beef and Greater Omaha, when the attorney came from Philadelphia.

In the end, all left having enjoyed the meeting with Fr. Lannon.  Yet, we hope that was not the end in building a relationship with him and Creighton, and that we can once again sit down and discuss concrete steps for collaboration to truly strengthen the community for all.

Fr. Lannon became President of Creighton University on July 1, 2011.  He takes the place of Fr. John P. Schlegel, S.J., who served as president for 11 years.  Prior to coming to Creighton, Fr. Lannon served as the President of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Originally from Mason City, Iowa, Fr. Lannon becomes the first Creighton graduate to take the post of President, having graduated in 1973.  He joined the Society of Jesus in 1977.
