Action creates hope in times of crisis, chaos, and uncertainty. This past year, we have witnessed neighbors coming together to support one another. We have seen our mission in action every single day, thanks to supporters like you.
Your donation transforms lives by moving individuals from being spectators to actors in their own lives, as they advocate for their interests and build collective power.

Hope in Action
Supporting Alicia’s journey through illness and citizenship.
HWC organizers met Alicia while gathering signatures to support the Paid Sick Leave Campaign, her husband Mario explained just how crucial a paid sick leave law was to their family. Alicia was fighting an illness, and every day off work mattered. She could not sign the petition herself because she was not a citizen, but her family’s need for paid sick leave was urgent and real.
Identifying a Clear Pathway to Citizenship
Inspired by Alicia’s courage and resilience, our organizer stayed connected and encouraged her as she decided to try again for citizenship. With support from the Heartland Workers Center, Alicia persevered and this fall, she became a United States citizen. That same week, she received news of a medical match for her treatment. Alicia’s story is proof that hope and community support create real impact, even in the hardest times.
Training in Action
Preparing Bertha to take action in a dangerous situation.
Because of donations like yours, Bertha was prepared to quickly jump into action to prevent a tragedy. As a participant of our Heath and Safety Institute Training (HSTI), she knew the exact steps to take when a machine fire erupted in her workplace. Employing her training, Bertha was able to extinguish the fire which prevented injuries, loss of life, and further damages for her employer.
Training Our Workforce to be Safe and Knowledgeable
Our immigrant neighbors are an important part of our communities and many work in some of the most challenging and labor-intensive industries. We understand the communities that we serve. Our OSHA-authorized trainer provides training in Spanish and English so that workers understand the safety regulations and prevent injuries. Since 2012, we have trained more than 750 workers in the Heartland.
Learning in Action
Encouraging Juana’s path to citizenship.
Juana stopped by the HWC office, curious about who we were and what we did. She shared that she couldn’t read or write but wanted to learn. We connected her to local resources and asked if she had considered becoming a US citizen. As a 20-year resident, Juana said yes, she had thought about it many times but was discouraged, hearing from others that it wasn’t worth the effort because of her literacy challenges.
Aligning Plans to Achieve Goals with Confidence
Juana believed she could do it, she just needed someone to believe with her. With that encouragement, Juana decided to act on her dream of becoming a citizen. We helped her study for the exam and practice interviewing.
This fall, she successfully passed her citizenship test. Juana is proud to show others who doubt themselves that anything is possible with support and determination. She is extremely grateful to our team and says, “Sometimes all you need is one person to say, "I believe in you, you can do this!”
Our Work in Action Across Nebraska
In addition to Omaha, we work in Columbus, Fremont, Nebraska City, Schuyler, and West Point. Your generosity is invested directly into programs that provide tangible results statewide.
Workers' Rights & Safety
Our Health and Safety Training Institute improves working conditions by preparing workers to know their responsibilities and exercise their rights to promote healthy and safe work environments for all.
Civic Engagement
Increasing underrepresented participation in public life, educating voters, assisting with the naturalization process and ensuring that all residents understand their power to connect with institutions and effect change.
Leadership Development
Providing individuals with training, mentorship and the tools to identify and address issues where they live and work, using the community's own strengths and experiences as a framework for change.
We do not do things for our community members; we equip them with the knowledge and skills to do it for themselves, leveraging our community’s collective power.
Your Support Makes an Impact
The need for our work is ongoing. With your continued support, we can empower more of our neighbors, like those we serve, and effect lasting, positive change in communities across Nebraska.
Please make your gift today. Your generosity will ensure more impact in action from HWC in the year to come.
