Meet Our Honorary Co-Chairs!
Maria Vazquez, PhD
Maria Vazquez, PhD, is Vice President for Student Affairs at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska. Born in Mexico City and raised in South Omaha, she earned degrees from Metropolitan Community College, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. A founding member of the Intercultural Senior Center, she has served on numerous community boards and earned multiple honors, including the UNL Impact Award and Douglas County’s Martin Luther King Community Award.
Mark Martinez
Mark Martinez is a lifelong South Omaha resident and graduate of South High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he earned a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice. Over 34 years in law enforcement, he served with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Omaha Police Department—becoming the first Latino Captain and Deputy Chief—and the U.S. Marshals Service, where he was appointed U.S. Marshal for Nebraska by President Barack Obama. Martinez was also the first Latino elected to the Omaha Public School Board.
