Building a Stronger Nebraska: Honoring Our Workers This International Workers’ Day
On the first of May, we recognized International Workers’ Day. It was a time to pause and honor the backbone of our state’s economy: the diverse and resilient workforce that powers Nebraska every day. From our agricultural fields to our metropolitan hubs, our state’s prosperity is linked to the labor of our communities, particularly our immigrant population, who continue to drive economic growth and entrepreneurial innovation.
The Pillars of Nebraska’s Economy
Nebraska’s economic strength is a direct result of its workers. Immigrants are the lifeblood of key industries, yet they often face disproportionate and discriminatory barriers to leadership and fair pay. In a state where workforce shortages are a challenge, attracting and retaining talent is vital. Currently, our team serves six cities across Nebraska, working tirelessly to ensure that every individual, regardless of their background or status, has a safe work environment and the right to organize without fear of retaliation.
Bilingual Safety Training is a Strategic Advantage
In a global workforce, safety should not be lost in translation. When employees truly understand safety protocols in their native language, they gain the confidence to prevent accidents before they happen.
Our Health and Safety Training Institute transforms standard compliance into a culture of shared responsibility. Led by an OSHA-authorized trainer, our bilingual sessions in English and Spanish ensure that every participant masters essential life-saving skills that protect people and property. We incorporate high-impact, proven techniques designed for maximum retention:
Real-life scenarios that mirror your actual job site.
Hands-on exercises to build muscle memory and technical proficiency.
Small group discussions that encourage collaboration and problem-solving.
Request a training for your team to protect your team and safeguard your bottom line.
Bridging the Equity Gap
While Nebraska maintains a low unemployment rate, this figure masks significant underlying inequities.
Wage Disparities: Many workers continue to struggle with a widening wage gap, particularly in underrepresented communities, while costs continue to rise.
Safety Shortfalls: Federal oversight remains strained and it is estimated that it would take OSHA 185 years to inspect every workplace in the U.S. just once according to the American Federation of Government Employees.
Healthcare Barriers: The impact of new federal Medicaid requirements that are being fast-tracked in Nebraska and state medical plan premium increases – some as high as 11% – are extremely concerning. For limited-income families, these shifts create dangerous new barriers to the essential healthcare they need to stay healthy and productive.
Our Commitment to Progress
Honoring workers requires action. We remain steadfast in advocating for living wages, paid leave, and robust labor protections. The generosity of our donors and volunteers fuels our team’s work. Explore opportunities to support our mission.
As we look toward the future, let’s work together to build a Nebraska where the resilience of our workforce is matched by genuine care, dignity, and accountability at every level. Together, we can ensure that "The Good Life" is a reality for everyone who calls Nebraska home.
