Power in Numbers: Every Vote Matters for Nebraska’s Future

As we move into autumn, our community has an opportunity to look toward the upcoming elections in November. Participating in our democracy builds a state that is founded on the voices of those who live here.

With the 2026 General Election on the horizon, now is the time to look at the data – where we’ve been, where we stand, and how we can grow our collective power.

The Data: Our Power in Numbers

While Nebraskans traditionally have a strong turnout at the polls, reports from Nebraska’s Secretary of State show there is room to grow. In the 2024 General Election, our state recorded a 74% turnout of registered voters, with approximately 934,188 ballots cast. This was the second-highest number of votes in Nebraska's history, nearly matching the 2020 record.

However, the data also highlights where our work is most critically needed:

  • The Participation Gap: Despite high percentage of turnout among those registered, roughly 450,000 eligible Nebraskans did not participate in 2024 according to Civic Nebraska.

  • Demographic Disparities: Participation remains lower among younger residents and marginalized communities. In a state where local elections like those for county commissioners, state senators, and school districts can be decided by just a few votes, every single person’s voice truly matters.

  • The Global Majority Vote: Voter engagement is vital to ensuring state policies reflect our families' diverse needs. Our state is filled with vibrant cultures, but not all policies benefit the people. With nearly 25% of the state’s population comprised of our Latino, Black/African American, Asian, Indigenous, and mixed-race communities, it is important that voters from these demographics cast their ballots for representatives and policies that support their needs.

Be Prepared to Vote

Why We Vote

At HWC, we see voting as an extension of our advocacy for fairer wages, safer workplaces, and immigrant rights. In the past two years, Nebraskans have used the ballot box to approve critical measures, like paid sick leave.

Every vote matters. Be prepared for election day to ensure your vote counts.
